Phlebectomy, Sclerotherapy, Venous Ultrasound Mapping, Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

February 19-20, 2022
15.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)

Our highly-unique interactive 2-day hands-on training program is specially designed for physicians, physician assistants and nurses who want to gain clinical expertise in treating patients with superficial vein disease. This program covers phlebectomy and sclerotherapy techniques and lower extremity venous ultrasound mapping evaluations. Participants will rotate through our state-of-the-art endovascular suite, learning the newest best practices for these modalities.

To keep this course as true-to-life as possible, we will focus on teaching you how to master phlebectomy techniques using cadaver legs, along with real-time observational patient cases, under the direct supervision of our expert faculty. Additionally, you will learn sclerotherapy and ultrasound-guided sclero techniques and how to best optimize and manage patient outcomes. Participants will learn a step-by-step approach to performing a comprehensive venous duplex mapping exam on patients with varying levels of superficial venous pathology. Faculty will discuss indications and contraindications, how to best manage complications, equipment, cart set-up and post-op care. How to manage a superficial venous practice: insurance, billing and office management. This course is intended to deliver hands-on training in an intimate setting for a limited amount of participants.

Phlebectomy Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the venous anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology
  • Identify the treatment options of superficial venous disease
  • Identify the treatment options for non-axial veins, how to discern treatment modality - phlebectomy and sclerotherapy, and when to use a combination of both
  • Apply appropriate indications and contraindications for treatment
  • Discuss the surgical equipment for phlebectomy, hooks, and cart set up
  • Master best techniques to perform stab phlebectomy
  • Explain post-procedure instructions, follow up, and preventing complications from stab phlebectomy

Sclerotherapy Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the benefits of sclerotherapy to optimize clinical outcomes for patients with venous disease
  • Employ proper sclerotherapy techniques for patients presenting with varicose, reticular, and telangiectasias veins
  • Optimize patient outcomes and minimize complications
  • Communicate the risks, benefits, and complications of sclerotherapy
  • Describe how to manage complicated clinical conditions with a variety of techniques of visual and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy
  • Discuss the importance of pre and post pictures, best techniques, and how to integrate your practice dynamics (billing, PR, how much to charge, and advertise)

Lower Extremity Venous Duplex Mapping Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the superficial venous ultrasound anatomy and distinguish the surrounding tissues
  • Differentiate venous pathology from ultrasound artifact
  • Determine acute vein thrombosis, fibrotic intraluminal changes, and reflux
  • Recognize differential diagnosis and non-venous pathologies
  • Describe how to construct a superficial venous mapping diagram
  • Identify the different types of minimally invasive treatments and adjunctive therapies
  • Discuss the knobology of the ultrasound system and how to best optimize the images
